First Steps on the Harmonica
– Basic technique
The first session will be an introduction to the harmonica, the history and structure of the instrument. Students will learn how to hold the harmonica using both hands and what breathing techniques to use.
– Chords
When you play more notes at the same time then you are playing a chord. The students will learn to play C major and D minor chord rhythmically on the harmonica. They will start to develop their improvisational skills, and also training their ear.
– Single notes
By learning to play the C major scale, the students will learn how to play single notes on the harmonica, which is the main step to play melodies on the instrument. They will now improvise with single notes. They will be free to express themselves, producing the sounds and notes of their liking, whilst always following the basic techniques of the instrument.
– Repertoire
Folk and blues music are the most common music styles played on the diatonic harmonica. The students will have an introduction to those styles and they will learn how to play them.
– Performance
They will do a performance possibly using selected backing traks. This is an essential part in music education.
– Objective
The students will acquire the 4 following skills at a basic level.
